L'exploitation de la mine nécessite un chantier pharaonique, à ciel ouvert. La montagne est mitée. Les engins de terrassement détruisent tout et construisent une immense piste à flanc de côteaux. L'exploitation devrait durer encore trente ans. Les soldats du PKK ont attaqué le site en plein jour il y a peu pour bruler onze engins. Pendant la guerre civile des années 1990, l'armée turque a détruit les villages kurdes et caldéens de la zone en chassant et en assassinant leur population. L'Etat a donné des compensations financières aux survivants afin de s'accaparer les richesses du sous sol. La mine est aujourd'hui sur les terres du village chaldéen de Herbolé.
